  1. Divinity: “Iron sharpens iron, So one man sharpens another.” Proverbs 27:17
  2. United States of America: We, the people.  Not I the boss/founder/chairman/president
  3. United Nations: The United Nations is an international organization formed in 1945 to increase political and economic cooperation among its member countries.
  4. North Atlantic Treaty Organization:  Its main purpose was to defend each other from the possibility of communist Soviet Union taking control of their nation.
  5. Homeland Security: The Department of Homeland Security was established in 2002, combining 22 different federal departments and agencies into a unified, integrated Cabinet agency.

In launching our “Compound Effect” initiative to help address what makes the Bronx first in all things negative and last in all things positive, we would need to create a greater collaboration among actors, namely political, religious, community, school, corporate and not-for-profit leaders. When we collaborate more and compete less in serving our mutual constituents, customers, members or students, we shall achieve more with less strenuous individual/organizational efforts.

When the leadership of all sectors in the Bronx come together as a unified front in tackling the negatives, we will advance the positives simultaneously.  Close collaboration does not eliminate individual growth/success/achievements, on the contrary, it enhances individual opportunities.

We are cognizant of the fact that no problem in the Bronx is an isolated one.  Whether we are referring to violent crimes, poverty, health issues, education, broken homes, jobs, lack of civic participation, etc., we can link one after the other.

Therefore to solve the negative effect of one problem, requires going to the root cause.  As you would find on the Compound Effect Diagram, positives compound, as do the negatives.

Below are two historical examples of the benefits of close collaboration in tackling neighborhood, county, national, or international challenges:

  1.  Pre-World Trade Center terrorism, our nation’s law enforcement communities were not as collaborative as they are today. This closer collaborations enhanced their individual agencies’ effectiveness in prevention and addressing emerging challenges and as a result, the nation is in a much better position security-wise.
  2. United Nations was founded after two most tragic world wars. We haven’t had world war ever since.

Against this backdrop of the need for a united front in changing the status quo, STEMDUP INSTITUTE will be convening countywide forums to educate leaders on the Compound Effect.
