The Network for Democracy and Development (NDD) has condemned the terrorist attack at a catholic church in Ondo State, Nigeria.

The condemnation was contained in a statement jointly signed by NDD’s National Coordinator, Tajudeen Alabede, and its General Secretary, Muhammad Jameel Muhammad, on Monday June 6, 2022.

NDD described the attack as an “ungodly act of terror”.

“The attack led to the death of many innocent Christian worshippers at St Francis Catholic Church, Owo, Ondo State,” Alabede said.

“The mass shooting inside a church during the Sunday mass is heinous, callous and nefarious. Nothing can justify the heartless attack. A house of worship is a sanctuary which, even in a situation of war, should serve as an inviolable place of refuge,” he added.

NDD therefore called on the state government and the security agencies to do everything possible to apprehend the criminal elements and make them face the full weight of the law.

“There should be no mercy for those who are bent on destroying the nation and her people. There must be justice for the victims,” Alabede stated.

“We equally urge communities and citizens to work in close partnership with the government at all levels to stem the unimaginable level of criminality and bloodletting that we are witnessing in Nigeria.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the families of the victims, the people of Ondo State, the Catholic Church and the Nigerian Christian community,” he concluded.

On Sunday June 5, 2022, gunmen disguised as worshippers and opened fire at worshippers at a Catholic church in southwestern Nigeria, leaving dozens feared dead.

The attackers struck just as the worshippers gathered. Among the dead were many children.
