The Bronx community has celebrated the grand opening of the La Central YMCA.

While expressing excitement, Councilman Rafael Salamanca disclosed this via his Facebook on Friday October 28, 2022.

“The storied 170-year history of La Central YMCA is now the story of the South Bronx. After several delays, we finally celebrated the grand opening of the state-of-the-art La Central Y, a 50k sq.ft. the facility that will serve as a beacon for physical & mental well-being,” Salamanca wrote.

“As a kid from the South Bronx, I am proud to have first approved this project in 2016, paving the way for this site’s transformation from a vacant eyesore to a shining example of community development. TY, to all the local partners & stakeholders who made this day possible.”

Commenting on the event, a New Yorker, Karina Cardona, stated that it would be great if they offered discounts for bronx residents or day passes.

She added that “$70 per month is a bit difficult during this time when prices are going up on everything.”

The La Central YMCA in the South Bronx will serve tens of thousands of residents each year, create new jobs, and add recreational and learning spaces to the neighborhood, fostering community engagement for the young, the old, and everyone in between.
