The United States Education Secretary, Betsy DeVos, has pushed for the reopening of schools across the country.

While disclosing this on Monday July 13, 2020, DeVos reconfirmed Trump's threat to withhold funds if schools remain closed.

DeVos insists that the kids need to get back in the classroom, despite the spike in the cases of  coronavirus infections.

While speaking about the move in two television interviews on Sunday, DeVos stated that schools needed to reopen, even as several states continue to battle frightening numbers of coronavirus cases and hospitals in many cities struggle to cope.

"Kids need to get back to school; they need to get back in the classroom," DeVos said.

She, however, noted that local conditions should be taken into account.

"Families need for kids to get back in the classroom. And it can be done safely," DeVos stated.

The pressure to reopen schools has come from the top, with President Donald Trump threatening to withhold federal funding from schools that refuse to reopen.

Trump has also condemned guidelines from the federal Centers for Disease Control (CDC) for the safe reopening of schools, saying they were too rigid and too expensive.

Florida on Sunday reported a record in the highest daily spike of any US state since the pandemic began, with more than 15,000 infections.

To date, the country has recorded at least 3.1 million cases and 135,000 deaths.
