In a heartwarming Christmas Eve tradition, Cocoa Beach transforms into a sea of Santas, elves, and reindeer as thousands gather for the annual “Surfing Santas” celebration.

This unique event, born in 2009, has evolved into a festive spectacle that not only brings joy but also supports a noble cause.

The sandy shores of Cocoa Beach became the stage for this merry gathering, where both young and old, adorned in festive costumes, took to the waves to ride the surf.

The event, founded by Cocoa Beach resident George Trosset, has a mission beyond spreading holiday cheer—it raises funds for “Grind for Life,” a charity aiding cancer patients in their journey for treatment.

George Trosset’s inspiration for “Surfing Santas” came from a TV advertisement, and what started as a playful family moment in 2009 has transformed into a beloved tradition.

Trosset, now 70, recalls the humble beginnings, “The second year, we had 19 Santas. The third year we had 80… and now look at this. There’s thousands of people.”

Spreading Joy and Smiles

Underneath the cloudy skies, participants not only surfed the waves but also enjoyed a range of festivities, including a costume contest and a Hawaiian dance show.

The charitable spirit echoed throughout the beach as volunteers sold T-shirts and raffle tickets to raise funds for cancer patients and support the local surf museum.

Teresa Dell’Oglio-Garrett, an Italian native living near Cocoa Beach, shared her delight in witnessing the event’s growth.

“The camaraderie and the happiness in the air” drew her back for a second year, highlighting the evolution from a small gathering in 2017 to the massive crowd this Christmas Eve.

As “Surfing Santas” gains popularity, George Trosset reflects on its impact: “If that’s true, then we create millions of smiles every year—and that warms my heart.”

With its quirky origins and a commitment to making a positive difference, this surf-filled Christmas tradition continues to bring festive joy and support to those in need.
