Mayor Bill de Blasio said on Wednesday April 7 that New York City beaches would be open to the public for the Memorial Day Weekend beginning Saturday May 29, 2021. That includes Orchard Beach which is dubbed "The Bronx French Riviera'. City pools will open June 26, 2021 the day after the public school year ends.

There was no mention as to what safety precautions on wearing any face masks or other items, only the mayor saying "We'll continue to follow health guidelines to ensure the safety of everyone".

Lifeguards will be on daily duty from 10:00 A.M. to 6:00 P.M. Swimming is prohibited at all other times.

Bronx Borough President candidate Councilman Fernando Cabrera was the only Bronx elected official quoted in the announcement saying that it is great to know that our public beaches and pools will open on time. He added the opening of Orchard Beach will be a relief for all the people of the Bronx who go there, since COVID-19 has made it hard for people to enjoy the physical and mental needs of being able to get out and enjoy what is good for them.
