NYC Health + Hospitals reveals healing portraits mural at Harlem facility

NYC Health + Hospitals has revealed a significant addition to its artistic initiatives with the unveiling of a new mural at NYC Health + Hospitals/Harlem. This mural, named *Healing Portraits at NYC Health + Hospitals/Harlem*, is part of the Community Mural Project orchestrated by the health system’s Arts in Medicine department. Developed by artist Tijay Mohammed, the mural reflects a collaborative effort involving community members, staff, and patients.

*The Community Mural Project*, an expansive endeavor by NYC Health + Hospitals, has already produced nine new murals in the past year, adding to the initial 26 murals featured in the book, *Healing Walls: New York City Health + Hospitals Community Mural Project 2019-2021*. Funded generously by the Laurie M. Tisch Illumination Fund, this initiative aims to infuse art into healthcare environments, creating a positive impact on both patients and staff.

*Healing Portraits* pays tribute to Harlem’s vibrant community and medical pioneers who have made a lasting impact. Figures such as Ronald H. Brown, Dr. Luis T. Wright, and Dr. Samuel L. Kountz are celebrated, along with depictions of Harlem’s diverse culture and unity. The mural stands as a testament to the community’s resilience, fostering a sense of pride and unity.

Laurie Tisch, founder and president of the Laurie M. Tisch Illumination Fund, emphasized the significance of the mural, stating, “Healing Portraits will bolster pride in the neighborhood and hospital and bring joy and comfort to everyone who sees it. We are proud to have supported its creation.”
