The Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (JATC) for Heat & Frost Insulators, Local Union #12 A.J.E.F., is set to open its doors to aspiring Insulation and Asbestos Workers with a recruitment drive scheduled from March 4, 2024, through March 15, 2024.

The New York State Department of Labor made the announcement today, unveiling plans to onboard 15 apprentices across the Long Island and New York City regions.

In a unique limited-application recruitment, only 100 applications will be handed out on a first-come, first-serve basis.

The recruitment window will span 10 business days or until the 100-application cap is reached, adding an element of urgency to potential applicants.

Aspiring apprentices must visit Local 12 A.J.E.F. at 35-53 24th Street, Long Island City, New York 11106, between 8:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, excluding legal holidays, to pick up and submit applications in person. Valid government or state identification is a prerequisite during application pick-up.

To secure a spot in the recruitment process, applicants are required to pay a $25.00 testing fee, payable by money order to Local 12 AJEF. However, financial constraints need not deter potential candidates, as fee waivers are available upon presenting verifiable proof of financial need.

The recruitment process comes with specific eligibility criteria, including being at least 18 years old, possessing a high school diploma or equivalent, and passing a physical exam, sponsored by the committee, post-selection but before enrollment. The rigorous selection process includes a certified drug test and aptitude test administered by Apprentice Performance Solutions.

Applicants must also demonstrate reliable transportation to job sites and classes, provide their tools and work attire (approximately $500 cost), and, if applicable, submit a military transfer card or discharge form DD-214 after selection.

For those seeking more information, the JATC for Heat & Frost Insulators Local Union #12 can be contacted at (718) 784-1899. Additional assistance is available at local New York State Department of Labor Career Centers (dol.ny.gov/career-centers).

It is important to note that apprenticeship programs, registered with the Department of Labor, adhere to standards set by the Commissioner.

Furthermore, sponsors are obligated to follow anti-discrimination laws, encouraging women and minorities to apply, with affirmative action plans in place to ensure fair and inclusive recruitment.

This apprenticeship opportunity not only promises skill development but also champions diversity in the construction industry.
